The Beginning of Vespers of the Dormition
St. Elias Church, Brampton ON (Ukrainian, Greek-Catholic)
I admit it. Sometimes I regret not being Byzantine anymore.
I got this off of the Philadelphia Roamin' Catholic blog, now on my links list.
You can also read this, one of my old posts, if you haven't already.

Do Eastern Catholics accept the 1950 proclamation on the Assumption? From what I've read (only cursorily), the Eastern concept of the Dormition and the Western doctrine of the Assumption differ on whether the Mother of God actually died as a mortal dies, as Christ died. Is it kind of like the filioque, where Rome kind of says: well you have to believe it, but you don't have to say you believe it?
You are still Byzantine rite. So you don't have to regret that you are not.
It is like the Eagles in Hotel California--you can check out but you can never leave

No the Eastern Catholics, as well as the Eastern Orthodox, accept the Assumption. They simply go with the older name of the feast. Catholics accept the Dormition, but go with the newer name. It's simply about emphasis.
There is a beautiful shrine in Spain to the Dormition of Our Lady.
Many thanks for adding me. I'll reciprocate.
BTW, I'm sure there are more Hispano-American Catholic bloggers out there. LOL.
As well, you should definitely check out some of the Spanish language blogs listed on my page.
Miguel,
The Orthodox accept that the Theotokos was raised from the dead and assumed or translated into Paradise as the first fruits of the Resurrection. There is no question that she died in Orthodox theology, as there seems to be in RCism; the primary focus of the feast is that she died liked we do, was raised as we will be and intercedes for us in heaven.
Not sure whether that matches with the RC understanding or not, or the status of the doctine of the event in the Eastern Catholic churches.
A high backed phelonion on the priest? In a Ukrainian church? I take it that this parish isn't very ethnic.
Han
What is a phelonion?
I am an ignorant modern post Vatican II Latin Westerner.
A phelonion is an Orthodox chausable. Most have more the shape of capes, while Russian ones tend to have a high back.
