The Sarabite: Towards an Aesthetic Christianity

There is a continuous attraction, beginning with God, going to the world, and ending at last with God, an attraction which returns to the same place where it began as though in a kind of circle. -Marsilio Ficino

Okay, You Asked for It......

Here I am shortly before my monastic tonsure in the black beard. I think my beard looks cool. At that point, I had fully guzzled the punch. Now I'm over it.

So that is your first real look at the Sarabite. Sorry to disappoint those who really did think I was a skeleton wearing a sombrero.

By the way, I no longer have the beard. In fact, I have a shaved head and the only facial hair I have is a moustache.

That isn't a beard... these are beards!

And where precisely were you a monk? Was this a canonical Orthodox monastery? or one of the pseudo-dox groups that have sprung up?

Now, now, Father. That is a secret, though not a very well-kept one. All names and places on this blog are changed in order to protect the guilty.

And I was never Orthodox. I was a filthy Uniate Jesuit-spy, and still am on the books.

Damn Mexicans, can't even get the right picture on their fake papers. For a good fake green card call 202-555-0988, ask for Sergei. You too can go from Chuy the janitor from Oaxaca to Ahmed the computer programmer from Tajikistan. They you like you anyways, no one will know the difference. Peace.

Arturo,

Thanks for the picture, Arturo.

Boy was I surprised. I always imagined you as tall and gaunt, sort of El Greco-esque.

Ironically, the fellow in front of you looks very much like an old friend and colleague from many years ago, but definitely is not he.

Sharp looking guy, even in the long beard. I would mistake you for an ethnically Arab Orthodox person. Did anyone ever approach you and start going full speed in Arabic cause they thought you were culturally melkite instead of mexican?

That happened in the Coptic monastery several times.
